Labor Shortages in the Construction Sector

The construction industry is facing significant labor shortages, impacting project timelines and costs. This article delves into the causes of this crisis and discusses potential solutions, including workforce development initiatives and strategies to attract new talent. Understand the implications for your business and how to adapt.

Dueto a shortage of labour, we need to recruit migrant workers. However, the
processes for obtaining permits remain tedious for contractors; we still havetowander around to get it done. A one-stop shop with Fire Services, Health Department, Passport and Immigration Office, and Ministry of Labour all in one place would streamline this exercise.

Theyounger generation is not interested in working in the construction sector. Sowhen the current professionals retire or “go extinct,” there will be no one with the necessary know-how and techniques to take over. Machines and new technology will benefit the sector but won’t fully replace human expertise.

Technicalschools such as MITD, Polytechnic School, and Ecole des Metiers should be
established to support students who do not pass Grade 9. We, as contractors,
are willing to share our experiences with these students by offering on-the-job
training.

Trainingshould also be provided for more local workers who do not wish to become masons so they can become key personnel like technicians, foremen, and construction
specialists. Incentives should be offered to encourage them to join the construction sector.

The use of AI in the construction industry will benefit contractors. Offering
courses on how to use different tools could attract younger generations into
this field
